GTA 6 Pre-Orders Start Tomorrow, But There's a Catch for Physical Collectors

After what feels like the longest wait in gaming history, Grand Theft Auto VI pre-orders are finally here. Rockstar confirmed that pre-orders start on 25th June across digital storefronts and select retailers, with the game set to launch on 19th November 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The hype is real, the cover art looks stunning, and if you've been holding money aside for this one, the wait is nearly over.

There's just one problem, and it's a significant one if you care about physical media.

Rockstar has confirmed that what they're calling the "physical edition" of GTA 6 will not include a disc. The box ships with a download code inside. That's it. You pay for a box, you get a code, and you still download the entire game. For anyone who has been collecting physical games for years, that will sting.

To be fair, there's some practical logic at play. GTA 6 is going to be enormous in terms of file size, and a single disc release was always going to be a stretch. Rockstar have also been transparent about wanting to avoid pre-release leaks, which have plagued major launches before. Giving physical buyers the ability to pre-load from 12th November, a full week ahead of launch, is at least a gesture of goodwill toward those picking up a box copy.

But practical logic and collector logic aren't the same thing. A box with a code in it isn't really a physical edition. It's a digital purchase with packaging. There's no disc to display, no media to preserve, nothing to put on a shelf that represents the game itself beyond the box art. It sets a troubling precedent too, and Rockstar of all publishers doing it, one of the last major studios to have championed proper physical releases, feels like a genuine landmark moment in the wrong direction.

The standard edition is priced at $79.99 USD, with a $99.99 Ultimate Edition offering additional in-game content, cosmetics, and a free month of GTA+. UK pricing hasn't been confirmed at the time of writing, so check Rockstar's official site for updated regional figures.

GTA 6 is on course to be the biggest entertainment launch of all time. It deserves a physical release that matches that status.

Display the Box Art, Even If There's No Disc

If you're picking up the physical edition for the cover alone, you might as well show it properly. Our Display Case frames are built specifically for collector's editions and boxed games, keeping them protected and on display rather than buried in a pile. If a steelbook edition does surface down the line, our MagLevate range mounts steelbooks directly to the wall without a single nail or permanent fixing.
