PlayStation Is Ending Physical Disc Releases

The news broke this morning, and for those of us who care about physical media, it landed like a punch to the gut. Sony Interactive Entertainment has officially confirmed that physical disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will end from January 2028.

It is on the PlayStation Blog, signed off by Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications:

"Physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028. Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only."

Sony have framed it as a natural evolution, describing the move as "a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs." The language is measured and corporate, but what it describes is a line in the sand. After January 2028, if you want a new PlayStation game, a disc will not be an option.

The writing has been on the wall for a while, if we are being honest with ourselves. Grand Theft Auto 6, arguably the biggest game launch of this decade, arrived last week for pre-orders without a disc-based version. Before that, Nintendo quietly introduced game-key cards on Switch 2, physical boxes containing no game data at all, just a prompt to download. And now PlayStation has made the most definitive statement yet.

For collectors, physical media has never really been about convenience. It is about ownership in the truest sense. The weight of a case. Knowing that what you hold cannot be delisted, patched into irrelevance, or revoked when a studio pulls the plug on its servers. A disc is permanent in a way a digital licence will never be, and that permanence is becoming genuinely rare.

Which is why right now, more than at any point in the past decade or so of this ongoing physical versus digital argument, taking proper care of what you own actually matters. The library of physical PlayStation releases will stop growing at some point. What exists will become all there is.

At Frame-A-Game, everything we make is designed specifically for physical media collectors. Custom-manufactured frames built to precise sizes, UV protection included as standard, produced here in the UK. Want to show off a steelbook? Our Steelbook Art Range lets you display both the front and back of your steelie. Regular game cases have a home on your wall too, with multiple styles to choose from, because we believe the complete game, disc and all, should be on show. That is the power of bespoke frames built to the exact dimensions of the media they hold, something an off-the-shelf fix will never be able to achieve.

PlayStation's announcement is a reminder that physical releases are not permanent. Your collection is worth treating like they are.
